TSC New Recruitment Policy; All Intern Teachers to Serve For Two Years Before Confirmation to Pnp
TSC interns confirmation 2023.Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers are unhappy about a new rule from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The TSC now wants them to work as interns for two years before getting permanent jobs with benefits. In the past, intern teachers only had to work for one year before becoming permanent TSC employees.
This change comes as a surprise to many intern teachers who were expecting to be confirmed as permanent employees in 2025. The TSC, which is in charge of teacher employment, says this shift is necessary because they hired a lot of intern teachers and the country’s economy is struggling.
During a meeting with the Education Committee in Parliament, TSC officials explained that all 46,000 teachers currently working as interns will have to wait for two years before becoming permanent and getting benefits like pension. They made it clear that no teacher will be given a permanent job without completing the two-year internship.
TSC interns confirmation 2023.Intern teachers, who are already struggling with low pay, find this news demoralizing. They argue that the current pay doesn’t cover the cost of living. TSC had previously defended its internship policy, stating that teachers can intern for a maximum of two years.
TSC has been recruiting a large number of intern teachers. In February, they hired 20,000 interns, and another 20,000 in August. In January 2022, TSC assigned 1,995 intern teachers to schools and extended the contract for 4,005 teachers whose one-year term ended in December 2021. This brought the total number of intern teachers to 46,000.
TSC interns confirmation 2023.Looking ahead, TSC plans to hire 20,000 more intern teachers to support Grade 8 classes starting in January. Currently, interns in primary schools receive Kshs. 15,000 per month, while those in secondary schools get Kshs. 20,000.
However, after deductions, secondary school interns lose around sh. 3,000, and primary school interns lose around sh. 2,000 from their monthly pay.
