TSC Publishes Category of Primary Teachers it Will Longer Hire in 2024
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a significant change in teacher employment requirements, stating that teachers with only a primary school certificate will no longer be hired. Instead, the new standard is a Diploma in Primary Education. Those currently employed with a certificate are advised to pursue further studies by 2024, as the commission plans to cease hiring P1 teachers permanently.
This decision reflects the commission’s commitment to aligning with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and ensuring that educators are adequately qualified. The P1 certificate, previously a basic requirement, will now be replaced by a diploma tailored to the demands of the CBC.

TSC’s aim is to raise the quality of education across the country by setting higher standards for teachers. The new minimum qualification for teaching grades 1 through 6 is a Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE). Additionally, teachers who have completed specific training programs, such as ECDE, PTE, DTE, BED, DIP ED, and SNE, can obtain post-training upgrade certificates, allowing them to teach children in various grade levels.
TSC is actively monitoring the progress of P1 teachers enrolled in further education at Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) nationwide. The commission emphasizes the importance of continued professional development and higher qualifications to meet the evolving needs of the education sector.

With these changes, the hopes of P1 teachers who had relied on their certificates for employment with TSC have been dashed. However, in future teacher recruitments, priority will be given to those who have upgraded their qualifications to a diploma level.
Overall, TSC’s decision signifies a proactive approach to improving the quality of schooling in Kenya and ensuring that teachers are equipped with the necessary skills and qualifications to effectively lead education in line with modern curriculum standards.
