Primary Teacher Pathway and Automatic Promotions
For primary school teachers, the journey begins at Grade B5, known as Primary Teacher II. According to the CPG, primary school teachers will experience automatic promotions to C1 after three years in Grade B5.
Importantly, this removes the need for additional educational requirements or interviews, providing a clear and fair path to career advancement.
Secondary school teachers, equipped with the necessary educational qualifications, will also be placed in class C1.
However, for these educators, known as Primary School Teachers I, Middle School Teachers III, and Primary School Teachers, automatic wage increments are not guaranteed.
Instead, it is after three years at the B5 primary school level that these teachers will be automatically promoted to C1.

Promotions from C1 to C2 and C2 to C3
The process becomes more competitive as teachers aim to advance from C1 to C2. Promotion to C2 is contingent on factors like a minimum of three years of service at the C1 level and other qualifications, including at least a diploma.
Similarly, moving from C2 to C3 for qualified secondary school teachers necessitates an interview process. It’s not an automatic transition but rather based on performance and qualifications.
Teachers holding specific titles will begin at class C2 and will automatically advance to C3 after three years of service.
These adjustments in promotion and salary increase procedures reflect the TSC’s dedication to streamlining the system for teachers’ benefit.
The goal is to ensure fairness and transparency throughout the process. Furthermore, pre-selected teachers will receive immediate salary increments based on the terms of the CBA, which recently granted a 7% pay raise for teachers.
In summary, these changes represent a significant step towards improving the career prospects and financial well-being of teachers in Kenya.
The implementation of Career Development Guidelines and the streamlining of promotion procedures will not only boost teacher morale but also enhance the quality of education in the country.
Teachers can now look forward to a more transparent and rewarding career path in the education sector.
