TSC deployment of teachers .In response to the adoption of the Competency-Based Curriculum in Kenya, significant changes have been made to the deployment requirements for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) starting in 2023.
Under the new system, students under the 8-4-4 curriculum will transition to Form 1 upon successful completion of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.
The role of junior high schools has become crucial in educating students in grades 7, 8, and 9, preparing them for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) 2-6-3-3-3 system.
To accommodate these changes, the Ministry of Education and Culture has identified specific primary schools for conversion into secondary schools, with a focus on improving their infrastructure.
Furthermore, addressing the shortage of teachers in primary and secondary schools, the Ministry and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) are deploying qualified primary teachers to supervise high school students in secondary schools.
These teachers are required to meet specific criteria, including qualifications in special education, early childhood development education, relevant diplomas or degrees, and subject-specific expertise, even without a C+ grade in KCSE.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) aims to align with these changes by placing P1 teachers with various qualifications, including diplomas, advanced degrees, graduate degrees, and even master’s and doctoral degrees, in secondary schools (JSS).
In summary, the new TSC qualifications for P1 teachers tasked with teaching JSS reflect the changing educational landscape in Kenya and the need to adapt to a competency-based curriculum. These changes are geared towards enhancing the quality of education at both primary and secondary levels.
