Kenya’s National Examination Council (KNEC) has stepped up to defend Brainstar School in Isiolo following suspicions of exam malpractice. Allegations arose when all candidates from the school achieved identical scores in the KCPE science paper.
In a statement released on November 25, KNEC refuted claims of malpractice, asserting that there was no substantial evidence supporting such accusations. Despite the uniform 75% scores in the science exam, KNEC clarified that the paper’s multiple-choice format could naturally lead to similar answers.

CEO Dr David Njengere highlighted that, while the similarity might raise eyebrows, it falls short of evidence necessary for punitive action. KNEC assured that a thorough review found no indication of malpractice based on reports from examination centers and anonymous letters.
The council acknowledged that 131 candidates experienced grade inconsistencies in Kiswahili and English papers due to misalignment and sign language placement. Furthermore, errors in truncating grades for science, social studies, and religious education were detected, missing the expected plus (+) and minus (-) signs. However, KNEC emphasized that these issues only affected SMS results due to configuration problems, and the portal results remained accurate.

To address concerns, KNEC encouraged individual candidates and schools to submit appeals for a review of their examination results within 30 days, aligning with the council’s 2015 rules (Legal Notice 131). Candidates were also advised to collect official provisional result slips from their schools, urging them to report any discrepancies within the given timeframe.
In essence, KNEC aimed to assure candidates and schools that, despite the anomalies, a fair and thorough examination process had taken place. The council emphasized transparency, urging those with concerns to follow the prescribed appeals process and obtain official result documents from their respective schools for further review.
